"The Spaniard" Almost Escaped

Javier Bermejo Martin spent almost a week walking among the people of Santa Fe in the province of the Darien without without arousing the slightest suspicion. In the Guacamaya he stayed in room #27 starting on Thursday, 10 February 2011, and he spent his time enjoying life. "It was all girls," said Martha Quintana, the Mayor of Santa Fe. Others said he spent several nights looking for a black girl who he said was "the same as this color," as he pointed to his leather shoe, showing it to the receptionist. In Santa Fe everyone though he was a gringo, because he registered in the Guacamaya as Don North, the American who is missing and who is believed to be a possible victim of "The Spaniard."

On Monday when he was arrested by the Border Service, he was coming back from the community of Lara, where he purchased the horses from Bolivar de Garcia for $3,000 dollars, and Alberto Barrios, the some of a farmer did some hauling for him for $50 round trip. On the day he arrived in Santa Fe, Martin Bermejo was detained and questioned by Police Intelligence (DIIP), but they found no grounds to arrest him so they let him go. Local authorities insisted and called the Border Service,rift gold which finally arrested him on Monday night.

At the home purchased by the Spaniard, police found a .38 caliber revolver, a 12 gauge shotgun, as well as a good supply of ammunition, a machete, a dagger, a nonlethal electric weapon, and $14,000 dollars in cash. They also seized a laptop computer and under the seat of the car in which he was travelling together with Villarreal they found a 9 mm pistol "with a bullet in the chamber," said the police. "Maybe he was thinking about doing something to the young man," the Mayor speculated, because the Spaniard had asked Villarreal to take him back to a secluded area. "We can sleep peacefully," sighed the Mayor.
