Video Activision's explosive Call of Dut

Did you know Activision held a rather large Modern Warfare-themed event in LA last week called Call of Duty XP?Going by the amount of guns plastered over our front page, we reckon you probably did. What you probably didn't know, however, is that inside the Modern Warfare expo the publisher was keenly shoving attendees inside top-of-the-range Jeeps to engage in mock Call of Duty shoot outs.As you can see in the video below, Activision's event organisers went to great lengths to both thrill CVG's XP crew and try to sell them new Jeeps (the automobile brand did sponsor the event, after all). Watch in HD No comments yet, be the first! In case you missed the Call of Duty XP madness, stick your eyes on the first official Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer details, plus our Modern Warfare 3 hands-on from Los Angeles. For the word-shy, we've also posted video interviews on Call of Duty Elite and Modern Warfare 3 itself. Golf Star- Hole in Two

 。

 。

GolfStar doesn’t reinvent golfing games. It’s similar to other games in its class but succeeds in being a fun, fluid and faithful representation of golf. Simple pick up and play mechanics will appeal to many and good course structure in addition to a large international community compensate for its uninspired visuals. The elevator music may grate, but it’s a welcome foray into the online multiplayer sports arena. GolfStar doesn’t take itself too seriously; it’s just fun online golf.。

 。

That’s not all; golfers also have access to special skills bought with Skill Points. These unique abilities live in an action bar at the bottom of the screen, similar to any traditional MMO you may have seen over the past ten years, and provide an ample number of special shots that can be used on the green. Twist shots, approach shots and bunker shots – There’s a skill for every situation you may find yourself in. Skills can be upgraded in time, further increasing their usefulness, giving a strong incentive to see games through and reap the rewards.。

 。

Golf is an interesting sport. To outsiders, it’s men swinging clubs at white balls in the hope they land in a hole. To fans, it’s a hugely challenging game that requires immense patience, skill and accuracy. Golf is often considered to be one of those sports that is more entertaining to play than to watch, but based on the sales of a certain well-known video game franchise fans love to sink their teeth into virtual renditions of their favourite sport. GolfStar aims to capitalize on this popularity and take “the game” into an online multiplayer arena. Hundreds of other club-wielding jumper-wearing players can tee off against one another, and although I was sceptical about how well such a basic premise could translate, I quickly discovered there’s a lot more to MMO golf than meets the eye.。

Golf games can’t help but be similar to each other. There’s only so many ways you can hit a ball and whichever way you look at it, the fundamentals of golfing were firmly mastered in video game form many years ago. Although I will try to avoid comparing it to other online golf titles, GolfStar doesn’t stray too far from the tried and tested formula.  It has everything you would expect from a title in this genre, wrapped up in a sweet arcade presentation.。

 。

Once registered, a helpful tutorial guides you through the basics of the game. The core golfing mechanic is a relatively simple one. Two meters represent power and accuracy. Power is charged by holding the spacebar down and releasing it at the desired power level. Accuracy is determined by how close a reticule is to the centre of the accuracy circle. Both are simple timing games, and whilst you can reposition your shot and change clubs, that’s all it takes to take a shot in a basic game of GolfStar.。

 。

 。

 。

 。

When you’re not teeing off, a central plaza area is where players meet, chat and establish games. It acts as a hub for all of the game’s features including stores, locker rooms, record lists and character development screens. The store funds the game, with real-world transactions paying for the most exclusive products available. Making up for the lack of character customization during the actual creation process, the store stocks a large amount of weird and wonderful clothing items for your golfer in addition to a variety of buffs, clubs and other items. They are not vanity items either, with many increasing the stats of your golfing hero. There are two currencies to get to grips with, one is topped up via real world money and the other is a reward for good play on the green (nice swings, accuracy and games). Naturally premium items require the use of paid-for Star Cash, but there’s a good amount of stuff available for those who play for free, even If the prices are a little steep.。

There aren’t a huge number of courses to choose from, but it’s still possible to have an enjoyable eighteen hole game with what’s available. Players take their shots at the same time too, so there’s no need to sit through another player’s excruciating attempts at getting out of a bunker before it’s your turn to swing. Clubs can be upgraded giving you the ability to hone and refine your arsenal to your particular taste and playing style. At the end of each game experience cash and items are dished out to the players, along with a neat podium scene before returning to the plaza.。

Of course all of this substance would be useless without a realistic interpretation of the sport. Thankfully, GolfStar gets the basics right. Trajectory, slopes, and wind direction all play a part in your swing. Trees need to be avoided, bunkers are as cruel as ever and the rough disrupts accuracy. It makes for a competent game of golf even with the simple control scheme. Putting is also well done, with a grid outline indicating the presence of slopes and the depth at which they sink.  Every shot counts, and it makes a successful birdy all the more satisfying.。

Of course, hitting the spacebar key all day would bore anyone. Your golfer has many tricks up his sleeve and even more in his caddy. As your character levels up, ability points are earned on the green and deposited into four different areas - Power (increasing range), Impact (making nice shots easier to make), Control (improving accuracy) and Stamina (helps swings in rougher areas and increases consistency).。

 。

GolfStar at its core is a social experience. Players are encouraged to mingle, chat and compete with one another, which is why I was confused by the sheer lack of customization options for my golfer. With only four characters to choose from and very limited facial options, players in GolfStar are clones rather than individual characters. The four free golfers that are available at creation aren’t particularly inspiring either, and I’m pretty sure one of them is too young to be playing eighteen hole golf in the first place. Perhaps someone else is driving the caddy.。

BloodRayne Betrayal XBLA release date pul

Okay. Cross out all those other calendar entries you had for BloodRayne Betrayal. This release date is definite this time. Probably. The Xbox Live Arcade version of Majesco's bloody 2D brawler has been pulled forward from October 5 to September 7. BloodRayne: Betrayal is in development at WayForward, the team who breathed new life into the Contra (Probotector) series on DS with the brilliant Contra 4 in 2007. Rayne's first outing since the 2004 BloodRayne 2 on PS2 sees her slashing through side-scrolling 2D levels with a combination of gun and melee attacks. And it looks wicked. Mike Jackson

250GB Xbox 360 gets matte finish

The slim Xbox 360 is currently available in 250GB and 4GB variations, the first with a shiny finish and the second with a matte one. But this autumn Microsoft will reportedly launch the 250GB model with a matte finish, basically meaning less fingerprints and other marks. We've got some images that were released to press, but no other official details from Microsoft. We've sent the company a mail asking about it though.Late last month, Microsoft announced a new Xbox 360 wireless Bluetooth headset and Media Remote set for release this November. Tom Ivan

Early Access Realm of the Titans Hero Pre

 。

Ultimate- Balancing Spear: Ritter throws a spear. On impact it takes an average of the enemy’s hp and mp and knocks both bars to this average. This is a very devastating ranged move to punish opponents that are out of mana but still high in hp.。

 。

 。

 。

Misrefel represents one of the most feared of the offensive heroes. Her ability to deal damage at range and up close makes her a threat from any positioning. Only oppose her if you have a very good back up plan or you will find yourself another victim in her long killing streaks.。

 。

 。

 。

By Darren Henderson (DizzyPW), OnRPG Editor-in-Chief。

Ultimate- Blade of Vengeance: Misrefel launches her twin blades which track a target dealing considerable damage and slowing on impact.。

 。

 。

Ultimate- Siege Mode: Siege Mode grants ranged attacks with 100% splash damage for a duration of 40 seconds. The area of the splash damage is a sizable 300 units.。

The Offensive heroes are true to their name. They get up in your face, or blow you away with ranged physical damage like no one else can. If left unchecked, they will build into nightmarish foes that nothing will stand against come end game.。

 。

Some OnRPG viewers may already be aware of Haz’zard from the hero showcase we did on him recently. I thought he seemed quite horrifying in the hero showcase, and he met all expectations when facing him ingame. Haz’zard’s ability to cause wide spread damage to an area is borderline absurd. In any team battle you have to take Haz’zard out asap or your entire team will be stunned and burnt to a crisp.。

 。

Ultimate- Spirit Link: Charm a neutral creep that inherits Deccat’s base defense and magic resist. Charmed creep also inherits damage, attack speed, and health!。

 。

Ultimate- Thunder Clap: Nevetira’s ultimate is one of the most spectacular and dreadful to watch in the game. She fires a volley of her thunder balls in a fan shape, slowing spreading out from their initial location. When you hit the spell button again the balls freeze in place for a quick moment. They will sparkle with energy and then target the nearest enemy and fly at them, doing 120 damage, 80 AoE damage, and causing a 0.1 second stun for each ball that hits a target. Ouch!。

 。

 。

Now to get back on topic! It’s the best and worst time in a game development cycle for Aeria Games this week. Their prized game, Realm of the Titans, which they have spent countless after hours testing and honing over the past year is finally amping up for closed beta access this Wednesday! Beta keys and press releases are being sent out, and there’s no turning back now!。

 。

 。

Ultimate- Time Bomb: A time bomb is attached to an enemy unit. After a considerable wait, the bomb explodes, dealing massive AoE damage. However if the hero dies prematurely, the bomb goes off immediately, making this ultimate a powerful surprise to throw on a nearly dead hero in the middle of the confusion of a team battle.。

 。

 。

 。

 。

 。

Ultimate- Thousand Flames: Haz’zard releases multiple rings of fire that spread outward almost endlessly, at a speed of 300 units per second. If you’re stuck inside this range for the full duration, your chance of survival is extremely low.。

Silvar, aka the Houdini of the Woods, can initiate team fights and flee with hardly a scratch on him. This living treant might not be able to withstand the damage of some defensive heroes, but you’ll never catch him to finish him off!。

I think the Curse representative summed Samurai Spirit up best at our private press preview. “His ultimate can’t be targeted, runs faster than me, and deals massive damage. How is this balanced?” Samurai Spirit is a relentless pursuer that would sooner die than let his target escape him. If played right, all team fights should give your team a 1 member advantage.。

Abraxas is an interesting hero because he looks far too bad ass to be labeled as a support hero. He functions similar to the Demon Judge but with a few tricks that can save allies who get stuck in a tight spot.。

 。

Now you have a strong knowledge of both the titan skills and heroes available to you in Realm of the Titans. With just days away until closed beta, it’s time to get together with your team and start theory crafting on what team builds you will use to dominate the Realm. Even now I feel a bit fidgety wishing I was at home playing ROTT instead of at work writing about it.。

 。

Ultimate- Liaison to Hell: Dead Rider links enemy souls together. The enemy with the lowest hp takes extra damage based on the damage inflicted on his nearby teammates. This ultimate is nasty if you do not realize it is in effect because even if you hide on the back line, the damage inflicted on your tanks will still reach you.。

 。

 。

Spell casters play the role of controller in Realm of the Titans. Although they don’t dish out quite as much consistent DPS as the offensive heroes, their spells usually come with crippling side effects, aoe damage, and are incredibly powerful for ganking heroes in the early games when magic resistance is low and base damage is high. A properly played spell caster can set the pace of a match in the early game to help support offensive heroes build into unopposed end game monsters.。

Ultimate- Shaman King’s Curse: Pua-Pua is afflicted by the King’s Curse. This transforms him into a powerful buff action hero for a 25 second duration.。

Ultimate- Sword Storm: Concentrate Energy for 3 seconds or discharge on command. The longer you channel, the more damaging the swords are. Swords spread out in a line, shoot forward and converge on a target, and then break apart in a fan shape dealing more damage to foes caught behind the target.。

 。

 。

I myself have been having a blast seeing the various heroes in action while playing with my new friends at MOBAcast. We had a fun 3v3 scrimmage against them last weekend and Colby made a video of the epicness so check it out HERE. After less than a week of hands on time, things are starting to feel familiar and intuitive. Denying, last hitting, and harassing all form together into an intricate dance akin to a life and death piano tune (Ok I might have spent a bit too much time on Yue).。

 。

 。

Flame Wing is best described as the Ashe of Realm of the Titans. Through constant harass, he will whittle you down and then burst into action to steal a long range kill. Beware letting this hero free farm gold at all costs!。

 。

 。

 。

Deccat is quite a tricky offensive hero. He’s hard to characterize but deadly if played in the right hands. Using traps and CC, he will leave you at the mercy of his ultimate.。

Casteele is tough to peg in one archetype of hero. However, due to his turret system that works similarly to heimerdinger, I classified him as a defensive hero for his intense ability to lock a lane down and punish anyone who overextends on the enemy team gunning for a kill. Casteele makes for quite the distraction himself to pull fire off hurting allies.。

Ultimate- Piercing Barrage: Flame Wing Fires a barrage of arrows that penetrate through targets and continue forward. He is immobilized while in this state but can still aim in various directions.。

 。

Be sure to check out more works by Ajka at http://tirramisu.deviantart.com/.。

 。

This nasty tiger-like.. . creature might be just a cute little kitty by himself. But in a team battle he is MVP. His ability to unleash the best in all of his teammates makes him truly shine as both a defensive and supportive hero.。

 。

 。

 。

 。

 。

Ultimate- Order of Execution: Demon Judge places a death warrant on an enemy, causing damage over time to the marked foe. If a set amount of damage is inflicted to the target during the duration of the Order, a large additional amount of damage will be incurred at the conclusion of the hex.。

 。

It’s likely because I’m a major Sona fan, but Yue fits so well into my usual playstyle that I ended up turning her into a carry hero against Realm of the Titan’s own GM team in our preview event. She is a jack of all trades support hero, featuring a heal, a slow, a shield, and a silence. This unpredictable ghostly musician is a game changer in the right hands.。

 。

 。

Ultimate- Majesty: Majesty is a two sided ultimate that can be used on allies or enemies. When used on enemies, you can visibility of the enemy while simultaneously doing damage over time and lowering all of their resistances. This is invaluable against heroes utilizing stealth or very mobile heroes that attempt to juke your team by running through the jungle. When Majesty is used on allies, it buffs all of their defenses and recovers a portion of their hp.。

Marroc is a hybrid hero that deals much more damage than the average support hero. His twin blades pack a punch and his ultimate can turn any team fight into a one sided massacre.。

 。

As a support in Realm of the Titans, you carry the responsibility of three major roles. Deny, map awareness, and CC. Since supports aren’t as reliant as other heroes on farming gold, they are much more capable of focusing on your own minions and using the deny mechanic to last hit minions before enemies do, denying your opponents of valuable gold and experience. Since wards (items that grant vision in a set area of the map) are so cheap, it’s also best if supports keep wards up in all the major chokepoints of the map to give allies early warning of incoming ganks. Supports also excel at crowd control abilities, whether it be delayed damage (aka psychological damage), heals, or silencing spells.。

 。

 。

 。

If you are playing one of these monsters, it’s your job to tell your team what’s up and ensure their strategy is based around getting you maxed out on all your stats as soon as possible. If you are against them, it’s time to deny minions, tower hug, and do whatever you can to shut them down while they are still vulnerable in the early game.。

 。

Ultimate- : God Destroyer: Soul Taker vaults through the air to a target location, causing massive AoE damage on impact.。

 。

 。

Nevetira is a spicy little vixen that looks and feels like an unholy love child between LoL’s Janna and Ryze. With bursts of lightning, speed boosting powers, and a ranged tornado at her disposal, she will leave you harassed and confused.。

 。

You may recognize him from OnRPG’s noob stomper image I posted earlier in the month. Aether is a glass cannon with far too many skill shots to count. But if played properly, he can be considered the most dangerous hero on the map, causing massive constant damage at melee and ranged distances.。

My award for most entertaining hero in Realm of the Titans goes to this weird little man. Though he can be played more as a spell caster than a support, I more preferred focusing on the support side of his build. He carries a large box on his back full of more tricks than Fiddle could hold a candle to. One of his most signature abilities is to create a clone of an enemy hero. The clone saps the power from the original Hero, channeling it as its own. And if Gadgetmeister attacks the clone, real damage is done to the original hero. And this isn’t even his ultimate!。

Soul Taker is quite a conundrum. Though not fast moving, he brings immense damage to targets he can slice his blades through. Most make the mistake of going toe to toe with him and then kiting thinking that the advantage is theirs due to Soul Taker’s inability to keep up with them. That’s usually their final mistake..。

 。

Anyhow I felt it would be best to give a brief description of the heroes available at launch and what makes them each so special. This way OnRPG viewers will be in the know and get who they want on day 1 instead of fumbling through dozens of champions that don’t fit their play style and end up spending closed beta in the proverbial ELO Hell.。

Welcome back to episode 3 of OnRPG’s Early Access: Realm of the Titans series, focusing on the Heroes themselves! Before we get started I wanted to give a shout out to a fantastic artist named Ajka (Alicja Chrena) I met at Anime Expo who helped me bring to life the image of what Dizzy from Guilty Gear would look like inside the world of League of Legends.。

 。

Ritter is the poster child for a Knight in Shining Armor. Acting as half tank and half support, he rides the front lines disrupting enemy heroes left and right while soaking up damage and protecting his more vulnerable teammates. He is definitely a high skill cap champion though so expect a few beat downs before you get the hang of him.。

 。

 。

As thanks for everyone who has followed this Early Access series, we will be providing keys granting guaranteed access to Realm of the Titans as well as a starter pack of goodies courtesy of Aeria Games. Stay tuned as the keys will become available later this week!。

Ultimate- Binding Chains: Within a range of 1500 units, Sealed Beast boosts all allies’ speed to equal the fastest ally. All enemies caught in the range will move as slow as their currently slowest moving teammate.。

 。

 。

 。

 。

Ultimate- Dragon Evil Release: Marroc releases the spirit of a fiery dragon from his blades, targeting and chasing a selected enemy hero for a period of time. This dragon will also damage any enemies it encounters while chasing the enemy hero. In a worst case scenario this skill will send a skilled enemy hero running for their life to protect their teammates. In the best case scenario, the enemy will be clueless who the dragon is chasing and result in a breakdown of enemy formations and an ensuing ace.。

 。

Oh Pua.. how I despise you! You’re the Teemo of the ROTT world.. except Pua-Pua goes where he pleases! His Mid-Range tribal dart gun can cut down a wary enemy before they recognize its happening.。

 。

Ultimate- Overgrowth: Silvar weaves roots through the ground, snaring nearby enemies and doing 80 damage per second.。

 。

Don’t let the name fool you. Defensive heroes can still pack a punch in many cases. However these tanks can survive through virtually anything if built for it and still come out on top. Masters of split pushing and overextension, no one can scout or disrupt the enemy team quite like this set of heroes.。

 。

 。

Ultimate- Melody of Sorrow: Yue channels a tune that spreads similar to Haz’zard’s Thousand Flames ultimate. After a short period of time it takes effect, silencing and damaging enemies for every second they remain within her 1200 unit range. If uninterrupted, she seems to be able to channel this spell for 20 seconds straight if mana permits.。

Although I was unable to see much of the Demon Judge in play, his ability to support an offensive carry is uncanny and dangerous. The Demon Judge acts as the ultimate target caller in team battles, amplifying the power of his teammates so long as they follow his orders. Speaking of orders, opponents will have to be quick on their feet to get out of his ultimate alive.。

Ultimate- Tidal Wave: Summons a tidal wave that crashes forward, pushing enemies and minions 3,000 units back from the origin of the wave. This is amazing for buying your team time after losing a team battle.。

 。

Tide Walker is a goofy little critter. He takes on the form of something between a sea monkey and a bull frog. His mastery over water spells and disruption is no joke though. He also has one of the greatest utility ultimates in the current game.。

This nasty little goblin-like creature and his trusted mount spread discord and chaos quickly and efficiently all over the map. Due to insane mobility, Dead Rider is a top tier roamer who will leave opponents in fear of overextending away from their towers’ protection. However not even this can save a team from Dead Rider’s team fight killing ultimate.。

 。

 。

Ultimate- Crimson Fury: Summons a giant samurai warrior who relentlessly pursues an enemy hero. Samurai Spirit can teleport to his summon at any time during its short duration.

Twisted Metal delayed to 2012

PS3 exclusive Twisted Metal has been delayed from its previously targeted October 4 release until "early 2012" to allow for extra polishing, Eat Sleep Play co-founder David Jaffe said today. Writing on the PlayStation Blog, Jaffe said: "A lot of dedicated, supportive, passionate Twisted Metal fans have been waiting for the return of Calypso's demented contest for a long time but the truth is: we're just not ready yet."It sucks bad when games miss their announced launch dates. We're gamers too and we know how annoying it is. It's disappointing and frustrating and it really takes the wind out of your sails if you're a fan that has been looking forward to playing a title for a long time."Thing is, you gotta trust me when I tell you that - with this extra time for tuning and polish - the game is going to be so much better than it already is... There's a great, classic industry saying by legendary Nintendo designer - and personal hero - Shigeru Miyamoto that goes a little something like this: 'A late game is only late until it ships. A bad game is bad until the end of time."We plan to ship the best Twisted Metal ever made... Most importantly, we plan on treating you - the kind folks who play our game (and pay our bills) - like the VIPs that you are. You only deserve our best and we appreciate your understanding as we take a little more time to guarantee that our best is what we deliver." Tom Ivan

New budget PSP aimed at youngsters, says

Sony has said the budget PSP model revealed at GamesCom last month will be targeted at a "very young" audience. Set to launch this autumn for €99, the PSP E-1000 lacks wi-fi capabilities but will offer access to the full catalogue of PSP software either on UMD or from the PlayStation Store via Media Go."You will see the audience skew younger," Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss Jim Ryan told MCV. "At €99/£89 it will make a great Christmas gift. It's a device to play UMD games. It's all for the audience."If we are going to take PSP very young - teens and much younger - they are happy to just play the game. If taking wi-fi out is the price to pay, we're happy to. The €99 price tag is a real barrier that we've got under which will help us lift off."Sony is offering discounts on 100 digital PSP titles this month as part of the PSP Power Sale promotion. Wii U price, release date to be announced

Nintendo won't announce the price and release date for Wii U until 2012, president Satoru Iwata has confirmed. Speaking to investors following the company's disappointing first quarter financial results, the executive said: "Since the Wii U we showed you at the E3 show in June was still in the development phase without very specific proposals on the software titles, we are going to announce the release date and the price next year when we are able to explain the specific proposals."All we know for certain at this point is that Wii U is planned for release next year after March 31.Iwata also admitted Nintendo is concerned about the possibility that the drastic 3DS price cut barely six months into the system's lifecycle could make potential early Wii U adopters hold out in the hopes of something similar."With regard to the influence on the Wii U, what we have to take most seriously is that the price markdown could damage the trust of the consumers who bought the Nintendo 3DS just after the launch," he said. "I feel greatly accountable for it. Our decision of the price markdown this time has a side effect that, at the launch of the Wii U, people may feel that the price might drop in the near future if they wait. What we will be able to do to recover the consumers' trust before the launch of the Wii U is very important to us." Tom Ivan

Need For Speed The Run trailer reveals 91

Here's a new trailer revealing the new Porsche 911 Carrera S racing along mountain roads in Need For Speed The Run.According to EA's blurb, it's got around 500hp and 800 lbs of torque. That sounded ridiculous to us so we checked Porsche's official website, which says it's got 400hp and 325 lb.-ft.So since we're making shit up, EA, let's just say it has a jet engine and can get to 756mph in three seconds. And cook you egg on toast. You will only be seeing this car in your garage if you grab the Limited Edition version of the game. It joins the stunning Lamborghini Aventador and the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 as perks for your extra cash. It's out on November 17. Mike Jackson

Vita price not a reaction to Nintendo 3DS

Sony's $249 (€249) price tag for PlayStation Vita was not a reaction to the affordable pricetag Nintendo slapped on its 3DS handheld, according to Sony. 3DS was originally launched at the same price in the US in March - until Nintendo chopped a third off the device's RRP in July.Despite having a greatly superior feature set, Vita will launch at approximately the same RRP as its predecessor, Sony's PSP."$250 or €250 has always been our target price to hit for PS Vita, since the beginning of the development of the platform in 2008," Sony's global studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told the latest issue of Edge."We did not price PS Vita to match 3DS. Consumers have to see the value to shell out their hard-earned money, so each product must have the right price to meet the consumers' perception of the value proposition of each product. We believe €250 - €300 for the 3G/WiFit model - is the right price for PS Vita."Vita, which has been dubbed the "easiest PlayStation platform to develop for" won't be hitting Europe and the US until next year - but is set for release in Japan before the end of 2011. Limbo developer buys independence from in

Limbo developer Playdead has bought back its independence from investors. Game director Arnt Jensen and company CEO Dino Patti initially funded Limbo's development themselves, with assistance from the Danish government, but the pair had to approach investors for help as the game - first planned as a free PC title - expanded to a paid one for multiple platforms."We are really happy about how it turned out even though the cost was higher than we had hoped," Patti told Edge. "The process was very educational and this is a big step on our way to become fully independent."Limbo was the highest grossing Xbox Live Arcade title during a record 2010 for the service. It arrived on PS3 this July and on Steam earlier this month.Playdead also told Edge its next project "is a little more ambitious than Limbo" and "will take at least three and a half years". Tom Ivan

SCE 'not concerned' by 3D TV adoption rat

SCEE senior development manager Simon Benson has said the platform holder isn't concerned by the reportedly slow consumer uptake of 3D TVs. "It's certainly not a concern for us on the game side, the major reason being... when we're adding 3D features to a game, it's not a significant overhead for us," he told Gamesindustry.biz. It's not like we have to justify being able to sell millions more games because of it, it's just another feature of the game."What we're talking about here is, in some cases we've had titles where 3D has been half a percent of overhead," he added. "It can literally be the render programmer spending a couple of weeks manipulating it... So often it's the case of it doesn't even hit the radar of whether we should or shouldn't, it can just be done."Clearly 3D TV sales are important to SCE parent Sony though, which has invested heavily in the technology. Benson said the price of 3D sets is coming down "all the time", suggesting "the margins aren't that different" between 3D and non-3D TVs, which should draw new customers in."We're not asking people to fork out twice as much here, and I think what probably going to happen over time is it'll be the case like now, if you try and go out and buy an standard definition TV you probably just wouldn't be able to," he said.At E3 in June, Sony revealed plans to release a PlayStation-branded 3D monitor designed to be affordable for all later this year.Last week, EA CEO John Riccitiello said 3D gaming hasn't caught on as the company once expected it might, and that the firm plans to refocus investment in other areas. Driver PC DRM requires constant internet

Ubisoft has revealed that the PC version of Driver: San Francisco will require players to be constantly connected to the internet. The Driver store page on Valve's service lists "3rd-party DRM: Ubisoft's Online Services Platform" in its game details section, and Ubisoft community developer Mathieu Willem confirmed on the official Driver Twitter: "PC version requires permanent internet connection."Ubisoft first revealed its controversial DRM in January last year, saying it was "justified by the gameplay advantages offered by the system and because most PCs are already connected to the internet". It went on to say the measure "offers protection against piracy, an important business element for Ubisoft and for the PC market in general".However, it later loosened its policy so that players only needed to be online when booting up PC titles.

Ubisoft drops From Dust DRM

Ubisoft is to release a patch for the PC version of From Dust that will remove online authentication DRM entirely. According to Rock Paper Shotgun, the publisher originally stated the game would require a one-off online activation, before later deciding it would always need an active internet connection to launch. If the latest post on the matter by a Ubisoft forum manager is to believed, that won't be the case for much longer."We recognize that one of our posts in the From Dust forum regarding the need for authentication in the game was not clear," it reads. "We sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding."Our tech teams are working on a patch that should release in approximately two weeks that will eliminate the need for any online authentication. This development time is required as we are working to ensure that those who have already started the game, and who's progress is currently saved on our servers, will receive and save their game information locally."Once the patch is ready, players who already have the game will automatically receive the update on their next login and subsequent game sessions will be 100% offline."Earlier this month, Ubisoft also backtracked on the use of always-on DRM for Driver: San Francisco following negative consumer feedback. Halo 4 director quits, cites 'lack of exc

Halo 4's not out until late 2012 but Microsoft has already seen a key departure from its dev team in creative director Ryan Payton, who's confirmed he has left the company. The ex-343 Industries man - who joined the Halo 4 team after his acclaimed work as assistant producer on Metal Gear Solid 4 - put his decision down to not being "creatively excited" for the project anymore.Payton's now started up his own studio, Camouflaj, and is already working on two new titles."I had a great run at Microsoft," Payton told Kotaku. "I don't regret one day of it. But after a few years, there came a point where I wasn't creatively excited about the project anymore." "The Halo I wanted to build was fundamentally different and I don't think I had built enough credibility to see such a crazy endeavor through," he added.Payton's work on MGS4 included updating the series' often clunky controls, plus balancing the game and story for international audiences. "It was all a crash course on AAA game development," Payton said of his MGS days. "It was an experience that prepared me for a big budget, high risk project like Halo."Though his NDA prevents him from talking about his Halo 4 work in depth, Payton confirmed he was very much focused on the story, working with Halo franchise director Frank O'Connor and the creative team to develop the Halo universe. He also hired MGS4's audio director Sotaro Tojima as Halo 4's audio director. "There's no doubt that his Japanese sensibilities will bring a lot to the new game and I'm confident the game is going to sound epic," he said. Andy Robinson

ArcheAge What We Know So Far Pt. 1

By Darren Henderson (DizzyPW), OnRPG JournalistArcheAge, for those unfamiliar to the name, is among a special club that veteran MMO gamers either love or loath. That club is the ‘Next Gen MMO’ club and its membership seems to be growing larger each month. ArcheAge in particular seems to be taking a rather gigantic leap over its predecessors and, if successful, may provide one of the most fulfilling experiences on the MMO market today. Of course with ridiculous titles comes epic fail potential and the pessimists of the Internet are watching with great anticipation to see this one flop like all the others. Let’s talk about some of the features that make this game worth all this pre-launch hype.8 Races: Out of the eight races in Archeage, six have been confirmed with actual screenshots. They are the Dwarves, Elves, Ferres, Hariharan, Nuians, and Warborn. Although unconfirmed, the other two races seem to be visible on the game back story page as a type of undead mystic and a human sized fairy. Luckily the English page and interviews has given us the important hint that each race carries specific traits so let’s explore the Ferres, Elves, and Nuians in greater detail.Ferres: This race is quite beast-like and looks like a mix between humans and jungle cats. As a nomadic race they have perfected their skill at hunting and specialize in defeating their prey with swords and bows. They are best known for the grand snow lions they ride into combat. Elves: Don’t expect anything out of the ordinary with this race. They are the stereotypical elves perfected from generations of lore. Isolated? Check. Forest dwellers? Check. Oh they primarily use bows and magic? Go figure. Their appearance is generally fairer skinned than the human-like Nuians and their bodies appear much slimmer as well.Nuians: The Nuians seem well rounded but most trailers and screenshots I have seen portray them as a race valuing tradition and strength (and swords, big ass swords). They hold their religious faith in Goddess Nui in the highest regard and are known to only break from their harmonious nature when their beliefs are threatened by outsiders.Beyond the racial inherent bonuses, your character can learn up to three of ten ability sets to determine your overall character build. Think of this as a more concise version of RIFT’s skill system in that it gives you freedom to design your own class but not so much freedom that the prospect of balancing the game for PvP becomes a development nightmare.Combat: This archetype is the core on which the warrior builds his entire strategy. Combat symbolizes Kyrios, god of destruction. Kyrios ensures victory to those who have faith in him, but is cruel and destructive to enemies. You can use destructive attack skills in a rage to various surrounding enemies at the same time and your attack speed can be temporarily increased to a great extent through haste. Fortification: Much like combat, fortification is vital to any true warrior. You can’t dish out tons of damage if you die from focus fire by the time you reach your enemy. Fortification symbolizes Shatigon, god of wealth. Shatigon has the power to bring wealth and creates impregnable fortresses. You can use skills to increase your health and defense or to temporarily become invincible, and sometimes protect your allies by switching the surrounding enemy’s aggro to yourself. Will: This archetype grants incredible support power and mobility. You will likely see it commonly on both warriors and priests. Will symbolizes Sal, god of portal and sealing. Using the power of Sal, players can heal allies, protect allies from damage, seal enemy skills, and even teleport around the battlefield.Artistry: This archetype is needed for full support priests. Artistry symbolizes Lucius, the wanderer who has greatest wisdom, but always hides it in his jokes. Using the power of music, you can increase the recovery rates of your allies and bolster movement speed on the battlefield.Devotion: Represented by Kyprosa, the gatekeeper of dreamworld, Devotion is an archetype trained completely in the arts of defensive magic. Not only will you unlock the strongest healing skills in the game, you will also be able to control the veil between life and death.Death: The death archetype is an incredibly dangerous art to master that only the most wise (or foolhardy) mage should attempt. By utilizing the Goddess Nui, overlord of the underworld, you can deal immense damage to your foes and break their will with raw fear of your might. The ability to detach your soul from your body also comes in handy for playing a trick or two.Magic: The magic archetype is represented by Aranzeb, a mage who remains calm no matter what storm of war brews around him. This is the more stable tree of magic that contains a well balanced mix of fire magic and defensive shields.Conjury: Conjury is an archetype with much utility that is useful for both wizards and chasers. Goddess Dahuta, master of the sea and change, grants her followers the ability to seep deep into the minds of your foes. This archetype focuses on disables and summoning evil spirits to haunt your crippled opponent.Wild: This archetype is the calling card of chasers. Not only does it provide you with excellent ranged bow skills, it also gives you the ability to tame wild beasts to protect you at melee range.Calling: This archetype is extremely important for chasers and essentially represents the rogue build from standard MMOs. It represents Melisara, who dared to try killing a god. Just like Melisara, you will train in stealth arts to overcome foes much stronger than yourself through sneak attacks, long range strikes, and some of the fastest dashing ability in the game.As mentioned before, classes are not set in stone, and you are free to experiment with any combination of the above abilities to create a hybrid class that works for you. Personally I think an assassin that utilizes Calling and Will would make an incredible force on the battlefield. Teleportation, fast dashing abilities, and clutch heals to protect allies all in one class sounds pretty fun. Perhaps combine it with death to gain some insurance against fatal mistakes and you have a class that will drive your foes mad.Unfortunately I'm running late for a meeting but I plan to continue this discussion of ArcheAge tomorrow with a look at the basic features that make up the game world such as castle construction, territory control, and the evolving debate on an open PK system.

Mirror's Edge 2 uses Battlefield 3 engine

Although EA has said a couple of times that the Mirror's Edge franchise will return one day, things look to becoming ever more solid as Official PlayStation Magazine tips the sequel to return on Frostbite 2 with reassuring certainty. Back in June EA Games boss Frank Gibeau felt comfortable enough to avoid dismissing the notion of Mirror's Edge 2 on DICE's Frostbite 2 engine saying, "You'll see that combination I'm sure."OPM is now reporting on insider whispers which add more credence to the idea of Faith hop, skip and jumping onto Battlefield 3's stunning engine."The Frostbite 2 engine will pave the way for Mirror's Edge to make a free-running return," says the mag, much to our delight. What exactly that will look like is still uncertain (Faith may not even feature). EA itself has admitted that it needed time to work out the best way to approach a Mirror's Edge sequel, although it sounds as though that work is already under-way.Order OPM here and have it delivered straight to your door

Activision sued by Maroon 5

Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine is suing Activision over the use of his likeness in Band Hero. According to Levine, although he had agreed to appear in the game, he believed it was to sing along to Maroon 5s She Will Be Loved. However, in the game Levine's character can also be used to sing tunes that "would not have been chosen by him for recordings or performances".As well as singing other songs, the game also allows players to change Levine's voice altogether by switching his vocals out for a femalefs.Seeking unspecified damages, Levine is suing for fraudulent inducement, breach of contract, violation of the common-law right of publicity and unfair business acts or practices. In April last year, No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani filed a similar suit against Activision. DICE No shooting civilians in Battlefiel

DICE has confirmed that Battlefield 3 players won't be able to shoot civilians. Speaking to RockPaperShotgun, executive producer Patrick Bach said the decision was made because the studio didn't want the game to become the subject of controversy."If you put the player in front of a choice where they can do good things or bad things, they will do bad things, go dark side - because people think it's cool to be naughty, they won't be caught," he explained."In a game where it's more authentic, when you have a gun in your hand and a child in front of you what would happen? Well the player would probably shoot that child. We would be the ones to be blamed. We have to build our experiences so we don't put the player in experiences where they can do bad things."Me personally, I'm trying to stay away from civilians in games like BF because I think people will do bad," Bach added. "I don't want to see videos on the internet where people shoot civilians. That's something I will sanitise by removing that feature from the game "We are trying to do something that is more mature. Mature not being gore - some people confuse the two. That's childish actually, to want more blood."DICE revealed last week that Battlefield 3 will support 24 players across all platforms in its Team Deathmatch mode, which won't feature vehicles. MS New dashboard not just for Kinect use

Although clearly conceptualised with Kinect in mind, this autumn's redesigned Xbox 360 dashboard update will improve the experience for regular controller users too, Microsoft has said. That's according to Xbox Live's senior director Jose Pinero, who told CVG in a recent interview the new backend is a "happy medium" of motion sensor and controller functionality.Asked if the new Dashboard will improve the Xbox experience for controller-only users, Pinero replied:"Yes. Anecdotally, before I came here I was showing it to my wife and she was like, 'oh, that's a lot easier'. We can't make it too easy for people, so we made it easier for someone who's not a gamer or a tech enthusiast and then it'll be easier for the gamer too."He added: "I think it's a pretty happy medium and that's been our goal since the launch of Kinect, to make sure we're creating great content like Star Wars, Sports and great family content, but also making sure we're not losing the Gears of War, Halo and Call of Duty fans that really built the Xbox brand."So making sure we've got great content for both audiences in a combined platform is a big challenge. I think the new dashboard is still super-fast to navigate around."Microsoft's official philosophy for the new dash is "all the entertainment you want, with the people you care about, made easy." Forza Halo 4 video - Now with Cortana com

You've probably already heard Jeremy Clarkson trying to get his head around Halo 4's Warthog in Forza 4. He was rubbish. He may know his XZ120s from his R3T40s (we made those up) but he clearly didn't know his Halo. So, when it comes to talking Halo in Forza 4's Autovista Mode, Turn 10 has got an alternative and she certainly knows a thing or two about the Warthog. Woops Dead Island dev build blunder on S

Steam purchasers of Deep Silver's Dead Island have seemingly be sent an incorrect version of the game designed for developer testing. Users on the official Steam forums point out mysterious lines of code present in their version of the zombie RPG, which mention among other things Xbox Live.Abundant glitches and the ability to no-clip through walls also sounds alarm bells that the Steam version of Dead Island isn't quite right.A Deep Silver spokesperson confirmed it's currently looking in to the Steam reports and will endeavour to make sure PC players have an enjoyable experience.A day-one patch to address 37 known issues should also help a bit.Read our Dead Island review if you haven't already. Soul Calibur 5 director details 'Critical

Soul Calibur 5 director Daishi Odashima has unleashed a barrage of details for a new 'Critical Edge' system being worked into the new fighter. "Critical Edge is a new attack system that delivers high damage to the opponent," he said, adding that it "can be used in combos" and "requires 1 Critical Gauge bar".He goes on: "The Critical Gauge can be charged up to 2 bars. So some characters can connect 2 Critical Edges in a row."A small portion of the Critical Gauge can be used to perform Brave Edge; a powered up versions of standard attacks (character shines when used). The properties change depending on the move; increase damage, adds additional attacks, gives advantage on block, changes hit property etc."He later details some of the ways players will be defending themselves in the new Soul Calibur. "There are 3 defensive systems. Quick Move can be performed by tapping the same direction twice. Kind of like a faster version of the [8-way Run] 8WR," he explains. "[It's] similar to SC2's evasion but doesn't have invincible frames. It's very easy to do and can be used by beginners too," said Odashima.Fight fans gathered at the Evo 2011 fighting championships in Las Vegas last weekend where they got the chance to try out Soul Calibur 5 - and share the love by uploading tons of videos to the internet.

Xperia Play is 'reversing the free games

Most downloads by customers on the Xperia Play - that's the 'PlayStation' phone with the PSOne slide controller - are paid for, leading Sony Ericsson to point to a reversal in the trend for free games. Bloomberg reports that more than 75 percent of the downloads on the Xperia Play are paid for. The device itself hosts free titles as well as ones holding a price tag between 69p and £6.05."It's reversing a trend of a majority not paying for games," Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB's head of market development, Dominic Neil-Dwyer, told Bloomberg at GamesCom, pointing to other app stores where the trend of free downloads still exists. The Xperia Play saw a massive price reduction at the beginning of the month. The 50 percent price slash saw the phone come down from £500 to £289. Tom Pakinkis

Twisted Metal Delayed To 2012

Twisted Metal was originally supposed to ship on October 4, 2011 but according to a post on by Jaffe on the PlayStation Blog, the developers at Eat Sleep Play are "just not ready yet.""It sucks bad when games miss their announced launch dates," said Jaffe. "We’re gamers too and we know how annoying it is. It’s disappointing and frustrating and it really takes the wind out of your sails if you’re a fan that has been looking forward to playing a title for a long time." Jaffe affirms that the Twisted Metal game that ships will be the best Twisted Metal ever made, and they only want to ship the best product. As someone who is used to waiting very, very long for great games to come out (ahem, The Last Guardian and Diablo 3) I think it's a good idea when developers hold on to their titles a little bit longer in order to ship out something that will exceed expectations. Project Blackout - Tactically Twitchy

 。

 。

By Michael Sagoe (mikedot), OnRPG Journalist。

 。

 。

SG Interactive is taking a departure from their usual bright and colorful online games to bring us a gritty and violent look at modern warfare with Project Blackout (PB). Released back in 2010, Project Blackout is a multiplayer online first-person shooter, which contains a mix between tactical and fast pacing. PB looks and plays very similar to many FPS games before it, but is it hiding something to make it worth the download?。

PB also features the option to change your character’s look with avatar items, but these items are restricted to head items such as face paint, masks and hats, and avatar sets that completely change the look of your player model altogether, and just like the weapons available, none of these can be tweaked.  For such a modern game, it’s pretty disappointing that you’re only given access to bare bones customization options, and to make things worse, most of the customization is locked away from non-paying players, only being obtainable using points (real currency). The only other bit of customization available to all players would be the mission system and ACT ranks (Advanced Combat Training) that lets you tweak your character in various ways to fit your playing style.。

 。

 。

 。

 。

 。

 。

The community of players for Project Blackout seems to be pretty large and active. Lobbies for both the newbie and open channels are usually full during peak hours and there’s enough variety in interest for game types that you won’t have much of a problem find a room for a game type that you’re willing to play. Working with random public players is about as average as online gaming communities can get: Most players keep to themselves and seldom communicate with each other, but you will occasionally get some nice, supportive players here and there, as well as the occasionally trash talker/sore loser/troll.。

That’s right. You know how most multiplayer FPS games have the option for you to pick up someone else’s gun if you’re out of ammo? Well you can’t do it here, unless you pay for it. The game literally takes features that are common with FPS titles and then sell them back to you… That right there made me pull out the WTF card.。

 。

 。

Battling out in PB also feels average at best: Run, shoot, stab, crouch and throw a grenade or two while cooperating with your teammates. No matter how much better or worse your weapon is compared to your enemy’s, one or two well-placed shots to the head can pretty much do you in, and with all the different weapons available, PB has a strange balance between luck and skill.。

 。

Controls for PB are typical of your standard first-person shooter. There isn’t even a tutorial at the start of the game, but if you’ve played just about any first person shooter title before this one, you’ll know exactly what to do: Use WSAD keys to move, mouse to aim and shoot, R key to reload, number keys to switch weapons, etc. The only slightly unique feature in PB’s control scheme is being able to trigger weapon functions using your MOUSE2 button, which lets you use various features of your weapon such as looking down the iron sights of your rifle, steadying your grip for increased accuracy while gimping your mobility, speeding up your ability to switch between two magazine cases, etc. All firearms seem somewhat accurate to their real life counterparts.。

In terms of cash shop balance, it’s WAY off. There are so many different boosters you can purchase to give yourself hefty advantage over non-paying players, such as quick reloading, extra grenades, faster/slower respawning and even (get this…) weapon pick up.。

The visuals of PB are simply not up to snuff in comparison to other modern shooters out there. They may look nice from a distance, but taking a closer look will reveal dank and blurry textures all over the place. Shadow effects, light reflections and all other effects simply look plain and dated. The only decent part with PB’s visuals comes from the wacky action ragdoll that makes dead bodies flail like crazy. As an added touch, every time you get killed in battle, there’s a deathcam attached to the head of your character, so you can watch every moment of your flailing dead body in glorious first person view, which adds a bit of shits-and-giggles value.。

 。

 。

 。

The core gameplay found in PB contains almost nothing out of the ordinary: Game modes available contain your standard matches including Team Deathmatch, Bomb Run, Elimination, etc. Nothing special or amazing regarding these modes since you can find them in just about every other multiplayer FPS game out there, but you can also play these modes with special conditions such as Sniper Rifle or Shotguns only. This adds a nice change of pace, but gets old quickly. There is one mode that I did manage to have a blast with, and that would be their recently added Dino Escape mode, where dinosaurs (controlled by live players) have to stop human players from escaping a Jurassic Park-Esque landscape, complete with a big ‘ol T-Rex.。

Overall, Project Blackout is a functional online multiplayer FPS title base on modern warfare and that’s about it. There’s nothing much here that sets it apart from the competition and has some wonky balance issues on the side. Give it a go if you need a quick fix, but there are far better alternatives out there.。

 。

 。

When starting out, you’re not granted any customization options. You simply type in your desired player name and go. Once you check into the game’s item shop, you’ll find a hefty amount of different weapons, avatar models and other misc. items to choose from. The weapon selection is incredibly vast, but you can’t tweak or modify your weapons in any way, so if you were thinking about adding a nice little silencer or modified scope to that shiny new assault rifle you just bought, you can sort of forget that… unless, of course, the weapon you just purchased already has the features you were looking for.。

3D support for 'PSP Remaster' games possi

Sony has said that adding 3D support to PSP games played on PSP via its new 'PSP Remaster' program is easy and may be supported in future. The Remaster Program, announced in May, will see PSP games remade for PS3 with added HD visuals and save-game transferring support - essentially letting you choose to play your games on the big or small screen. Teiji Yutaka, a developer on the project, told Famitsu magazine: "There's a group within the Software Solutions department that specializes in 3D graphics," adding, "When they first saw the Remaster project, they suggested that they might be able to insert 3D graphics inside there." According to Yutaka, they did it and it was a piece of cake. "They managed to implement it with hardly any hit to performance and processing speed at all, and I don't think that would've been possible without the processing power of the PS3," he said. Colleague Tadayasu Hakamatani chimed in: "There wasn't much rejiggering we had to do to make 3D work, but some games need to be reworked because the way they're programmed prevent them from working in 3D out of the box. It's possible to add 3D graphical information to games via the PSP Engine OS, though, so support can be added without a lot of extra burden."The first PSP Remaster-enabled game is Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD Ver., which hits Japanese shop shelves on August 25.

Is Black Ops Rezurrection DLC worth 1200

Everyone loves zombies. If you don't, you might want to check your pulse. No pulse? You ARE a zombie. Call Of Duty: Black Ops fans are certainly a little amorous towards the undead. The game's own zombie mode proved a smash hit when the FPS released last year, with players clamouring for more. Now Treyarch has scratched that itch with the very appealing Black Ops Rezurrection DLC, which releases this month on Xbox Live. However, in typical fashion, the studio and publisher Activision have slapped a hefty price tag on the pack. It'll set you back 1200 Microsoft Points to purchase the content. It's a big pricetag for a big release. But is it worth it?Let us know your thoughts below... CVG Staff

Mass Effect 3 will say goodbye to Shepard

Mass Effect 3 will conclude protagonist Commander Sheperd's story, Bioware CEO Dr. Ray Mazuka has confirmed. Talking to our mates at PC Gamer during Gamescom, Mazuka described the third game as "a brand new beginning" saying that the Mass Effect universe will live on without The Shep."We have ambitious plans to continue this franchise going forward," Mazuka reassured our colleagues. "Mass Effect 3 is simultaneously a couple of different things; a thrilling and epic conclusion to the trilogy as we promised our fans we'd provide for Commander Shepard," he added. "But it's also a brand new beginning - it's an entry point for new fans and it's also a brand new beginning."Have a look at the latest Mass Effect 3 trailer, focusing on combat, which also came out of Gamescom. UK police arrest Anonymous, LulzSec suspe

British police arrested two men yesterday as part of a trans-Atlantic investigation into cyber attacks committed by hacking groups Anonymous and LulzSec. Scotland Yard said it picked up a 24-year-old and a 20-year-old from two separate UK addresses and seized a computer, Yahoo reports."The arrests relate to our enquiries into a series of serious computer intrusions and online denial-of-service attacks recently suffered by a number of multi-national companies, public institutions and government and law enforcement agencies in Great Britain and the United States," said detective inspector Mark Raymond from the Metropolitan Police's Central e-Crime Unit.Police also confirmed that a further two suspects were yesterday charged in relation to denial-of-service attacks carried out by Anonymous. They'll appear in court on September 7 alongside two others previously charged with the same offence, which carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison.Anonymous was heavily linked to a hack attack on the PlayStation Network in April, which resulted in 77 million users' account details being compromised. Speaking yesterday, Sony CEO Howard Stringer said the PSN "is more secure and better than ever". Tom Ivan

Dark Age of Camelot A Simpler Time of MMO

By Remko Molenaar (Proxzor), OnRPG JournalistDark Age of Camelot is a Pay-to-Play 3D MMORPG that revolves around the war of the realms following King Arthur’s rule. This medieval fantasy MMORPG is developed and published by Mythic Entertainment on October 10, 2001. The world revolves around dragons, magic and massive battlegrounds. This game has been out for a while but OnRPG never gave it a really close look. I volunteered to step into the realms and see why so many consider this one of the greatest MMORPGs of all time. Not only is this game focused on defeating monsters found in dungeons, but the open world and RvR zones challenge the player to participate in huge PvP battlegrounds to earn further loot.Once the player starts up the game and selects a server, they are offered the choice between three realms. These realms are Albion, Hibernia and Midgard. A detailed history of the age of King Arthur I is available on Dark Age of Camelot’s official page. It’s definitely worth checking out if you love intricate storylines and intend to really get immersed in this game. Albion is through and through the land of Arthur. Forged from his iron will, paid for by the blood of Knights and commoner alike, Albion encompasses the ideals, the laws, and the heritage of its most famous King. The people of Albion are mostly homogenous, sturdy Britons, hulking Highlanders, graceful swift Saracens, and the tall intelligent Avalonians. The small, mysterious Inconnu along with the bestial Half-Ogres add a dash of the exotic to the Realm.Hibernia is the closest to nature and magic of all the Realms. Their heritage has long honed its citizens to channel the forces of magic and unleash its destructive force on their enemies. Human Celts and the almost-giant Firbolg live in close harmony with forest, glen, and all nature’s creations. The Otherworldly beautiful Elves, small mischievous Lurikeen, and sleek magical Sylvan harness the power of primal magic. The malevolent Shar have an uneasy alliance with the other races of Hibernia, and bring an undercurrent of evil to the emerald hills.Midgard is home to the snowy lands of glacier and fjord where the mighty Norse legions call home. These legions are hell bent to once and for all establish the rule of Midgard upon all the Realms. Midgard, land of lakes and wide slow rivers, is home to six of the most diverse races found in the three Realms. These races are the Norsemen (the humans who make themselves at home in these snowy wastes), short yet resilient and tenacious Dwarves, huge lumbering trolls, lithe dexterous Kobolds, shadowy, mysterious Frostalfs, and the primitive and proud Valkyn. After you have chosen a Realm it is time to pick a race. There are currently 7 races per Realm available. The following races are currently in the Dark Age of Camelot:Albion: Avalonian, Briton, Half-Ogre, Highlander, Inconnu, Saracen, and the Korazh(Minotaur).Hibernia: Celt, Elf, Firbolg, Lurikeen, Shar, Sylvan, and the Graoch(Minotaur).Midgard: Dwarf, Frostalf, Kobold, Norseman, Troll, Valkyn, and the Deifrang(Minotaur). After you have chosen the race you can pick a class among the various available and designated to said race. Currently there are 47 classes to choose from which is quite a lot. All these classes are broken down into four common RPG archetypes: Warriors, spell casters, rogues and healing classes. There are also Hybrid classes which combine skills from any two of the archetypes. The current classes that are available in Dark Age of Camelot are the following:Albion: Armsman, Cabalist, Cleric, Friar, Heretic, Infiltrator, Mauler, Mercenary, Minstrel, Necromancer, Paladin, Reaver, Scout, Sorcerer, Theurgist, and Wizard.Hibernia: Animist, Bainshee, Bard, Blademaster, Champion, Druid, Eldritch, Enchanter, Hero, Mauler, Mentalist, Nightshade, Ranger, Warden, Valewalker, and Vampiir.Midgard: Berserker, Bonedancer, Healer, Hunter, Mauler, Runemaster, Savage, Shadowblade, Shaman, Skald, Spiritmaster, Thane, Valkyrie, Warlock, and Warrior. Dark Age of Camelot is not the usual MMORPG where you level up, achieve new skills and upgrade your armor. In Dark Age of Camelot you actually have to spend time to think through your build. After some experimentation its best to pick your favorite weapon and beeline down talent trees that fully unlock that weapon’s potential. I chose to play as a Blademaster and I got multiple choices for my skills, such as skills for blunt weapons or sharp weapons. Since dual wielded blades I decided to go for the sharp weapon tree to get the optimized use for them. The interactivity of the environment in this game seems almost unheard of considering how old it is. You can actually converse with NPCs using the chat box and open doors to enter village houses! The graphics are dated but not nearly as badly as its competitors from the same era. Even the water has a mirroring effect and actually does look like water unlike many other MMORPGs.I must give readers a warning before jumping into this game. If you are not a fan of player on player combat and prefer to spend your time grinding mobs or taking on challenging dungeons, I do not recommend this game. It is absolutely vital that you join your fellow realm members to do battle for the glory (and special buffs) of your nation. To play this game and ignore this side of it would be as silly as to play League of Legends for only the computer AI battles. Thankfully the realm versus realm battles in this game are still remembered fondly to this day as one of the most polished and successfully implemented open world pvp systems ever implemented into an MMORPG. After experiencing it for myself, I can confirm the praise is well deserved. To play this old yet good looking MMORPG the recommended system requirements are really low. As long as you have a Pentium 4 processor with 2.4GHz along with a 64MB video card that supports DirectX 9.0 or later you´re good to go. If you have no idea what kind of computer you have or you´re simply not really into system specs, any computer made after the year 2001 is most likely able to run the game just fine.Even though this game is almost 10 years old I still had a lot of fun trying this game out. The lore behind the Dark Age of Camelot is quite known to everyone that has heard the bedtime stories about King Arthur and really makes this game unique. Despite its age, Mythic and EA still provide regular content updates to a player base that remains populated and active. There are special made servers for everyone to have as much fun as possible whether you like PvP or PvE. If you like old fashioned MMORPGs with more complexity than simple hack and slash games, I would recommend you to try out Dark Age of Camelot because this game has a lot to offer!
